Get It Scrapped! This Week

Another day, another post!!  :)  I hope you all are not getting tired of my Blog popping up in your Blog reader everyday!!  September is a busy month and I think I counted up 19 posts for this month...and that's not including random posts that I might throw in, too!!

Today, I am sharing two layouts for Get It Scrapped!,  The first, is What's Your Motif?...Houses. 

I wanted to create a "homey" little house on this layout, to show how much I loved being at my Grandparents house.  The soft trim and little heart are perfect details, to give a comforting and loving feel to my die cut house embellishment, which supports the theme of my layout and journaling.

The second layout was a lot of fun too and it focuses on using the color Green.  Here is a little info, on the color Green and a look at my layout:   "Green is the color of grass and leaves in nature. It's associated with growth, spring, and vitality. It's associated with money and envy. The physiological response to green is that of being refreshed, quieted, calmed. That’s why they have “green” rooms at TV studios for performers to wait in".

I wanted to use Green on this layout, to create a fun scene to go along with these funny photos of our little guy being followed by a line of Seagulls, who were after his Cheetos.  I love the pattern on the Green paper at the bottom of my page, because it resembles blades of grass...and also cute little birdie tracks.  I used the Green paper to create the effect of grass at the bottom of the page and balanced it out with the blue wood grain at the top of the page, for my sky.

M*A*S*H

Nope, we are not discussing the tv show M*A*S*H, but a fun new trend in the scrappy world!  Get It Scrapped! has a fun article up today for the Patterned Paper Mash-Up Trend.  This is a fun way to use contrasting patterns on your layouts.  You can go crazy and use patterns that are from completely different collections and it's a great way to put together your scraps and get them used up.
 

 

Mixing patterns on a layout, can be a great way to add interest and energy to your page, but it can also be intimidating for some of us.  If you want to work with a mix of patterns, but aren't sure where to start, choosing a coordinated collection can help take out some of the guesswork.  I used the Restoration collection from Crate Paper and incorporated 9 different patterns on my layout.  The colors still coordinate and work together, but there is a lot of visual interest on my page, because of the mix of patterns.  I also wanted to add in something a little unexpected, so I used two strips of the black & white polka dot Washi Tape and a pop of lime green, from the brads on the bicycle.

Washi + Triangles = Love! and a Winner!

Today I am up at Love My Tapes and, I am SO EXCITED to be sharing my first post with you!!  When I received my package of tapes, I was very happy to see a Pink polka dot tape!!  I knew that would be the first one I would use for a layout.  So I put my thinking cap on, to figure out how I wanted to use it on my page.  Well we all know, of course, that Washi Tape is a huge trend, so I thought why not incorporate it into another huge trend...Triangles!!  Triangles are popping up everywhere in the fashion and crafty world, so I decided it would be fun to use them on my layout.  Here is how I created my Triangles using the Washi Tape:

1.  Cut a strip of the Washi Tape, about an inch and a half.

2.  Next, fold over one side of your tape, bringing it to the center and folding at an angle.

3.  Then fold over the other half of your tape, to meet up in the center.

4.  Once you have your Triangle formed, just cut off the excess piece along the bottom.

And here is how I used the Washi Tape Triangles on my layout:

I just used a little bit of adhesive from a fine tip Zig pen to attach the Washi Triangles and finished off the page, by adding them as photo corners and also adding some outlined Triangles!

KIT, KIT HOORAY!

I LOVE kits, but let me just say, that I rarely buy them.  I have purchased a couple on my own and I have won several, from participating in various challenges or commenting on Blogs that are doing a giveaway.  Even though I love them, it is difficult for me to purchase one, because most normal kit prices run around $30 or so and then add on tax...Yikes!!  Now don't get me wrong, I order scrappy stuff online all the time.  But for my frail little psyche (and my wallet), it makes me feel better about a purchase, if it's $15 here or $10 there.  But spending a whole $40 or more at one time just freaks me out.  Weird, I know!!  :)  Because I probably actually end up spending more with the smaller purchases, than I would if I just bought the kit in the first place!!  But unfortunately, that is just how my brain works!!

Well, when I saw the September FITkit from Paper Issues, I just knew I HAD TO HAVE IT!!  It had some of the Everyday Eclectic papers from Echo Park and lots of fun little embellishment...wood veneers, washi tape, clouds, ribbons/twine, cameras!  So cute!  And the best part...the price is $25 on these kits and you can even get a discount.  Since Paper Issues and ScrapFIT teamed up with these kits, the DT members get a little higher discount which makes it even better!!

I have been able to crank out two layouts so far with this kit, and still have a ton of stuff left.  One I will share with you today and the next will be up this Tuesday, for my first post with Love My Tapes.

  
All of the papers and the majority of embellishments are all included in the Paper Issues kit.  The only things I used aside from the kit, are the black & white polka dot SMASH tape, Mister Huey's Spray Mist and Mask, and the American Crafts button.  And I know, we all have those pages that we finish and think, "well, at least it's done", and then there are those that end up being our favorites and we love them.  This is definitely one of my favorites!!  I always find that I am more pleased with pages that I complete, using kits because everything just works so well together.  You don't have to over think it and everything is right there at your fingertips!

Step Class #8: Misting with Stickers & Negatives

Hi Everyone!  I am so excited to be hosting my first Step Class at ScrapFIT and Sheila will be taking over as our Gab Girl on Facebook.  I know you will want to "Like" the ScrapFIT Facebook page and keep up with all of the goings on around here!

So let's get to our new Step Class for this month!  Sometimes, I find it hard to focus in on one thing for a tutorial because there are so many awesome things floating around out there in the scrappy world.  But one thing, I am constantly doing on my layouts, is using Spray Mist and negatives and usually combining the two.  So for this month, I want you to Mist on your layouts (or cards) using Spray Mist along with stickers and/or negatives (die cuts or masks).  

I'll walk you through the process I used for my page and then offer up a few more suggestions for you.

Step 1:  Select your background paper and have your photos ready.  Decide where you want to place the photos on your layout and if you are using a mask, add it in place also.

Step 2:  Once you have decided on your placement, remove your photos and any other papers you used in deciding your design.  Then you can move your layout with the mask still in place to an area where it is safe to mist.  Spray over your mask and then remove it from your page.

Step 3.  After you remove your mask, choose some letter stickers and place them over the misted area on your page.  When placing your stickers, do not push them down securely to your page, but just lightly place them and make sure none of the edges are sticking up.  

 Step 4.  Choose your second color of mist and spray over the area with your stickers.  Remove your stickers and you will have a negative space created by the mist.  If you have a die cut machine, you can use it to cut the letters for the second part of your title.  If you don't have a die cut machine, you can just use stickers for your entire title.  If you are using a negative cut title, make sure you place some larger pieces of paper under the edges to protect your paper when you spray.

Step 5.  After you spray over your negative cut, you will end up with title letters that look like this:

Step 6.  And if you want to have a little more fun with your mask and mist, place it in the corner of your page at the top and bottom.  For the effect I created on my layout, I took the nozzle out of the Spray Mist bottle and rubbed it over my pointer finger.  Then I just continued dabbing my finger over the mask to fill in the negative spaces with the Orange spray mist.

 Here is what I ended up with, once I put my page all together

 And that's it!! Easy Peasy!  Hopefully I didn't confuse you too much, since this is my first time up doing the Step Class!!  :)  

I also wanted to share a couple of options with you too.  If you don't have any spray mist, you can create your own, by purchasing a spray nozzle bottle and mixing in acrylic paint with water.  Just make sure your ratio of paint is very small, to keep from clogging the bottle when you spray.  And if you want to "jazz" up you misted title even more, you can outline it with a fine tip pen or if you are feeling really creative, you can stitch around your title with embroidery floss.

A Name Change & Life Lived in Instagram

 **BEFORE GETTING TO TODAY'S POST**:  I just wanted to give a little update, that I have changed the name of my Blog from The Paper Doll, to Ashley Horton Designs.  I will NOT be changing my Blog address, due to links that are connected to this current address, but from now on my Blog will show up as Ashley Horton Designs in your Blog reader.  And of course, I changed the header of my Blog...again!!  :)  This might happen frequently...because, well, I just get bored quickly!! 

Welcome to Friday!!  Since we started Home School at the beginning of August, I am really looking forward to Friday a lot more now!!  :)  And another reason to look forward to Friday, is the new Fabulous Friday challenge at Frosted Designs, each week!!  I think almost everyone will LOVE this challenge, because it is something that a lot of Scrapbookers utilize these days...our challenge this week is, PHONES (Pictures taken with a phone, phone as a theme, etc.)

I usually have my phone in hand at all times and with all of the cool photo Apps out there, it has become my go to for taking photos.  It is just so much easier, since I have it with me, instead of having to remember to charge my camera and lug it with me whenever we go somewhere.  My favorite photo App is Instagram!  I just can't get enough of it!!  :)  So naturally, it was a no brainer for me to create a layout about Instagram, using Instagram photos.

The fun thing about this page, is that these are pretty much just random photos from life.  There is really no specific theme, but I love that it includes various photos that I snapped and loaded to Instagram.  I used a lot of Studio Calico goodies on this one and one of my favorite techniques right now, the negative cuts!
