Hip Kit Club | Happy Memories

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Hip Kit Club to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

I have a new layout to share today, using the May 2016 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits from Hip Kit Club.  I used two of our May cut files and a lot of the exclusive products designed by Kim Watson! Both of my patterned papers are exclusives for Hip Kit, and I liked the look of the multi-colored paper for my cut file layered over the subtle Yellow dot pattern.

Kim's May cut file is a fun one, because there are so many things you can do with it! I only used a single photo, so I used the rest of the spaces for a mix of embellishments from the May Kit, along with some PL cards from the May Project Life Kit.

There are a lot of ephemera pieces included in the exclusive pack in the May Main Kit, so I had a variety to choose from for my layout. I mixed in some puffy stickers from the May Embellishment Kit, with enamel dots from Echo Park Paper and Bella Blvd and wood veneers from Jillibean Soup. I really like the different texture and dimension the embellishments add to my layout!

I also have a new process video to go along with my layout.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Crate Paper | Tiny Little You

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Crate Paper to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

This week the Crate Paper Design Team has been sharing ideas for mini albums!  There are so many ways to create a mini album, but my personal preference is creating my own base pages. If you’re not into that, there are a lot of pre-made albums out there that would work great with the Crate Paper products you already have on hand!

The Little You Girl collection was the perfect choice for the album I wanted to create.
I have plenty of baby photos, of all three kids, taken over the past 10 years! This album could definitely be adapted for a little boy using the Little You boy collection or you could create an everyday mini album, using any of the other Crate Paper collections.

My first step for this album, was deciding on a shape. I decided to cut a star shape from 10 of the patterned papers included in the Little You 6x6 paper pad. This was really easy to do with my Silhouette Cameo. If you don’t own a die cut machine, you could print out or draw your own template to trace onto patterned paper to create your album base pages. My stars are sized just a bit smaller than 6x6 inches, to fit on the 6x6 patterned papers. Once all of the stars were finished cutting, I adhered two of them together back to back, with a touch of adhesive. Then I stitched around the outside edge of each of the page sets to create visual interest and texture.

Usually the hardest part of a mini album for me is embellishing. But I didn’t have that problem with this mini album, because there are so many adorable embellishments in the Little You collection. I created my cover for the album first, using part of the vellum sheet, chipboard, clip and Thickers for our daughter’s initials.

I printed five photos, sized to 2x2 inches, to place inside the album. I had a total of 10 pages for the album, but wanted some of them to be decorative, rather than include a photo. I added two of the photos to the first two inside pages, with embellishments from the Little You collection. Then I alternated the rest of the album with photo pages and decorative pages.

Once I completed all of the pages for the album, I used a Crop-A-Dile punch to make a small hole on the left point of each of my star pages. I placed each of the pages in order on a metal ring that can be found at local craft stores. But I wasn’t done there! I wanted something a little more decorative than the ring just by itself, so I tied two of the Maggie Holmes Bloom tassels around the ring. The pink tassels were perfect with the pink in the Little You collection.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you've found some inspiration for your next mini album!

Hip Kit Club | Love Life & June 2016 Hip Kit Reveal!

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Hip Kit Club to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

Today, I'm stopping in to share my first layout, using the May 2016 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits from Hip Kit Club!  We've got some great cut files for May, that work perfectly with the kits, and I just had to go with the feather cut file. I did three cuts for the feathers. I cut some from White cardstock from the May Cardstock Add-On, so I could add watercolors that coordinate with the colors in this month's kit. Then I cut another set of White feathers and a set from a mix of patterned papers that could be layered over one another. I used some of our Hip Kit Club exclusive papers designed by Kim Watson, Jillibean Soup and Bella Blvd papers.

The exclusive Touch the Sky patterned paper from the May 2016 Main Kit and May Paper Add-On kit was just what I needed for my background. It continued the watercolor effect from the painted feathers and was subtle enough not to overpower the rest of the layout.

I kept the embellishing to a minimum and just added a few of our Hip Kit Club exclusive embellishments from the May Main Kit, May 2016 Project Life Kit and the May 2016 Embellishment Kit. Once my embellishing was finished, I sprinkled on a bit of Black Color Shine from my stash, to complete the messy, artsy look of the layout.

You can also check out my new Process Video, on how the layout came together!

Crate Paper | Baby Love

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Crate Paper to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

It's been a while since I've used any baby photos on my layouts, but I've just had to do some baby layouts with the adorable Little You collections from Crate Paper!  This layout uses the Little You Girl collection.  I used these photos on an upcoming mini album, and I thought I would add them to a layout too!

I wanted to use a mix of the patterned papers from the 6x6 paper pad, so I created a grid design background.  I cut 3x3 squares from the papers and then cut each of the squares into strips.  Then I placed them back together on a White cardstock background, keeping each square sized to 3x3.  I also alternated the strips for each square in a vertical and horizontal pattern.

This grid design allowed me to use multiple photos and add a lot of embellishments from the Little You collection.  You could add as many photos as you like to this type of grid design, since you have 16 squares.  I decided to go with four, and use one photo on each row.  And you could adjust the grid size by cutting your initial squares at a different size.

I tried to use a little bit of everything from the Little You collection to embellish the layout.  I wanted to have various dimension with the embellishments, so I used stickers, chipboard and ephemera pieces to add interest to the layout.

I love this collection, because it's perfect for baby photos, but could easily be adapted for other types of layouts.  No matter what you use it for, it's definitely going to be adorable!

Pink Paislee | Embrace Life

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Pink Paislee to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

It's Mixed Media week on the Pink Paislee Blog!  Mixed Media can be really fun or really intimidating for some people.  I had a layout on the Blog on Wednesday, that shares a fun technique for expert or beginner Mixed Media users.

I thought it would be fun to add watercolors to a cut file, and match the watercolors to the Fancy Free collection by Paige Evans.  I started the layout, by cutting the Sassy Circles cut file from The Cut Shoppe, which is a cut and fold design.  I cut the design from White cardstock, and before folding the circles to the front, I painted each one with watercolor paints.  This way, I could paint the circle halves without getting any paint on the front side of the layout.

Once the paint dried, I folded each of the circle halves over and then adding stitching with my sewing machine.  I wanted to balance the circle design at the top of the page, so I punched the fun circles from one of the Fancy Free papers and added them to the bottom portion of the layout.  I also wanted to continue the stitching, so I hand stitched around each of the punched patterned paper circles, with White embroidery floss.

After the background work was finished, I was ready to add my photo and embellishments.  I wanted to keep the photo and embellishments clustered, to keep from covering up too much of the background.  I also chose to do a Black & White photo, because I really love the contrast with the bright colors from the Fancy Free collection.

I hope you will give this watercolor technique a try on your next layout!  It's fun and easy to coordinate your watercolors with a scrapbook collection, and create a unique Mixed Media look!

Hip Kit Club | Bike Love

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Hip Kit Club to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

I got to play with my April 2016 Hip Kit from Hip Kit Club, one more time before the May Kits arrived on my doorstep.  I wanted to use up as many goodies as possible from the April Kit & Add-On Kits.  I thought it would be fun to create a custom background look with patterned papers from the Main Kit and Paper Add-On Kit, and the March Smell the Roses cut file.

Here's a little run down of the papers I used: Elle's Studio, American Crafts, Pinkfresh Studio, and ‪Hip Kit Club exclusive papers. I just love the way all of the papers coordinate each month! I wanted to add texture to the background, so I machine stitched along the edges of the flower die cut.  Then I added my photo and clustered all of my embellishments and title around the photo. I used several pop dots to add dimension to the photo to help it stand out from the background. I had a good bit of the My Mind's Eye wood veneers left, so I used them to create a fun border down the left hand side of the photo.

To finish the layout, I embellished with several Shimelle stickers, Heidi Swapp paper clips, Simple Stories wood veneers, and Hip Kit Club exclusive cut aparts. This was a fun technique with the cut file, and a great challenge designing the rest of my layout around the background.

I loved working with the April Hip Kits and now I can't wait to dive into the May Kits!  If you haven't had a chance to see what's available in the May Kits, make sure you head over to the Hip Kit Club website to check them out.  They are amazing!!

Pink Paislee | My Heart

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Pink Paislee to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

Mother's Day has come and gone, and I hope you had a great day yesterday!  Last week on the Pink Paislee Blog, the Design Team shared mother themed projects, and I finished out the week with a layout, using the Fancy Free collection by Paige Evans.

I love the bright colors in the Fancy Free collection, and I wanted to contrast them with a Black & White photo.  I started the layout by cutting a large title on my Silhouette Cameo and then backing it with patterned papers from the Fancy Free collection.  Next I added half of the large geometric heart from one of the Paige Kits.

I used my photo to connect the heart and title, and then added some of the fun embellishments from the Fancy Free collection.  I clustered some of the embellishments near the photo, so help it stand out from the background.  And I just had to use some of the buttons (my favorite) to embellish the large title!

I hope I've inspired you with some ideas for scrapbooking your Mother's Day photos!
