A few months back, I decided I would branch out and submit to a couple of the calls at Scrapbook Trends magazine. I have never sent anything in for their calls before. Well, of course, no email showed up in my inbox, so I think it's safe to say that these two weren't picked up!! But I still think they are both pretty darn cute and I haven't shared them on my Blog yet (or at least I don't think I have!!), so I decided today would be the day!!
Here's the first...a single-pager:
I used some cute Jillibean goodies on this one and I had a lot of fun making some of the embellishments for my page. I just free-hand cut several circles for each flower and then distressed the edges, layered them together and added buttons for the centers. I die cut the umbrella and then cut out the pieces to trace out the different pieces and then placed them to fit back together over the die cut. I added some stitching and the pom pom trim to dress it up and add some texture. And even though this one didn't get picked up for publication, it was still featured on the Jillibean Soup Blog for one of their recent Soup Spotting posts, which is pretty stinkin' cool!! :)

The second is a double-pager...I know, it surprises me too!! :)
I used a mix of Simple Stories and Crate Paper on this layout and I distressed, rolled, and punched the paper to create the beach/sand and waves look. I don't know about you, but I am loving the cute little banner flags that are so popular right now!! I just created these, by using some toothpicks and scrap pieces of my papers, that I folded in half and cut to the shapes that I wanted. I also used my Expression to cut the bucket shape and a few sand dollars and star fish to embellish the page.
So, these are two layouts that I am definitely happy with and they turned out exactly how I had in mind. And just because they weren't picked up, it won't stop me from submitting to those calls, because who knows when it might just be the right one at the right time??!! :)

ReplyDeleteI know how you feel Ashley, I have been submitting to CK for what seems like FOREVER!! I have been highlighted on the Club CK blog a few times, and that was fun, but no layouts in the actual magazine. I just recently started submitting to Scrapbook Trends and SNR, you are right, there are SO many talented ladies out there and such a small window...your layouts are always fabulous, so don't give up, someone will pick them up, like Erin said, I would pick them up if I were editor, your work has a bright bubbly personality just like you :)
ReplyDeleteThese LO's are lovely, Ashley! You have a healthy attitude regarding scrapping. We do it for us and anything else in terms of success is just icing on the cake. I have never submitted and wouldn't even know how. You are so right that you never know what they are looking for for each magazine. It doesn't mean that your work isn't good enough. Love the umbrella with all of the stitching! ( Your parcel is out in today's mail!)
ReplyDeleteThis goes along so well with what we were talking about yesterday. I am glad to see that you are not getting discouraged! Your layouts are beautiful! Who knows what is going to catch their eye and what they are looking for.. Thanks for this "reality" post. It is good to know that others feel the same way I do! PS. Whenever I can vote for one of your layouts, you know I got your back! :)
ReplyDeletethese are both great! sorry they weren't chosen! I've not been published it can be discouraging!
ReplyDeleteI love that umbrella!! Great layouts — their loss our gain! :)
ReplyDeleteAshley, these are both just gorgeous! I've never been published either...it's so intimidating to me. These are most definitely worthy of being published. That umbrella is amazing, and the 2-pager...just wow! So many amazing elements...the embossed "sand"...the flags, the banners...like Erin, said, I'd certainly publish it if it were my magazine :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty...both your layouts. I have never submitted layouts for publication and have respect for anyone who does. I never quite know what they are looking for, and some layouts look downright drab;-)
ReplyDeleteYou are one very talented scrapper and it surprises me that every one of your submissions isn't picked up for publication. But you have the right attitude and the right goal. Being published is just icing on the cake! I totally LOVE the 2 page Beach layout! Going to have to pin it!
ReplyDeleteI love both of these layouts! I can't believe they weren't picked up! That two pager is especially cute, need to keep that one in mind for this summer :)
