Doughnut Run

Get It Scrapped! had a great article go up yesterday, with ideas for using Doilies on your layouts.  Have you tried the Doily trend?  I've used them several times and really love the look they add to my pages.  Here is how I decided to incorporate them for our assignment at Get It Scrapped!:

When I think of Doilies, it reminds me of Diners and Coffee shops...just that touch of nostalgia from using them under coffee/tea cups or under your desserts.  I knew they would be a perfect accent, for a page of our kids' first visit to Krispy Kreme.  I like to use them on my layouts, as a way to highlight my title.  So for this page, I used part of a doily under my photos as a base for the title.  Then I was able to use the "extra" piece at the top of my photo strip.  I also added one more doily behind the focal photo on my layout, to create a visual triangle around the photos and title.  If you don't have any store bought doilies on hand, you could use an Electronic Die cut machine to cut your own or use Edger scissors (that cut different edges in your papers) on the outside edges of a coffee filter to get the same effect.

Even though, you've seen plenty of layouts lately, where I've used my Cameo...this is the first page, that I officially used it on.  I was in the process of working on this layout, when my machine arrived, and I figured that I might as well break it out and see how it works!  I used it to cut the word Doughnut for my title and couldn't believe, that it was able to make such intricate cuts.  I also used it for the circle design on my page.

Time to Get In Shape!

Well, at least, to get your Washi Tape in shape!!  Have you checked out our new challenge this month at Love My Tapes?  Here are the details, for what's happening this month:

1.  Create a Layout or Card that used washi/lace/fabric tape as a decorate shape.  Think outside the box and let's get creative.  Please let us know how you were inspired. 

2. The challenge is open until January 27, 2013.

3. A randomly chosen winner will win some LMT goodies.

 

I got to play along with our challenge this month, to help give you a little inspiration and here is what I created.

 

 

I used several different Washi Tapes and layered them over White cardstock.  Then I used my Cameo to cut Circle shapes for my page.  Once I had the Circles on my layout, I stitched each one and added a few embellishments to each of the shapes.  I even took the challenge one step further and used the same technique, to cut out the title letters for my page.

Two Peas Feautured Project!!

Happily Ever After Together

It's a new week and a new layout for Artful Delight!  We are moving closer to Valentine's Day and this Kit has some great papers and embellishments for your Valentine's or loved themed pages.  I took more of an every day approach to this week's layout, using a photo of my hubby with two of our kids.  And there is something very rare about this layout...I used the Black cardstock as my full background.  That rarely happens, because I always feel like I can't make the Black work, but I loved the effect on this page.

 

  
I love the doily patterned paper that is included in this kit, because it is great for fussy cutting!  I cut out several of the shapes and placed them around my layout.  The only extras, not included in the kit, are the Baker's Twine, flair button, and the mist that I used to color the "XOXO" chipboard piece.

Creative Scrappers Sketch #243

I am excited to be sharing another layout with you, for Creative Scrappers...and my first one for 2013!  Our Sketch Designers are an amazingly talented group of Ladies, and I love working with their sketches.  This week's Sketch was designed by Juliana Michaels and was so much fun to work with.  Here is my take:

I loved the fun banner pennants Juliana added to this sketch!  I mixed up my banner shapes a little bit, just to add in a fun element.  And I still had a lot of goodies in my November Kit, Gather, from Paper Issues so I broke it out for this layout.  I like to use a variety of colors, but I have to admit that the ones on this layout are my favorite.  I am an Autumn girl at heart and the saturated jewel tones of the Yellow, Red, Teal, and Brown just work so well together.  And, of course, I had to work in some wood veneers and I added some paint dots to this one.

Bad Photos, No Photos, No Problem!

I am so excited to share my first post with you today, as the Guest Designer for October Afternoon, during the month of January!  I was sent a ton of Farm Girl and Midway goodies and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw everything that was packed into that box!!  My first thought was, "where to start??!!"  But it didn't take long, to get the creative juices flowing.

I decided to start out, by using some of the Farm Girl collection.  It is adorable and I love the mix of images and the different patterned papers included in this line.  When I saw it, I thought of a photo I wanted to use to create a layout, but honestly, the photo was not that great.  So my challenge was using a bad photo, but still wanting to tell the story behind it.  I decided to "go big" with my title, embellishments and mix of products on this layout, to take some of the focus off of the bad photo, but still get my story scrapped.  The photo is dark in some places, over-exposed in others and also has some bad shadows.  But, I think using the "go big" approach gives your eye a chance to focus on all of the fun elements on the page, rather than the photo.

I really love the range of products that October Afternoon includes in each one of their collections...Buttons, Chipboard pieces, Stickers, Brads, Tin Pins, Miscellany Packs, Sprinklers, Washi Tape...and they are all coordinated perfectly.  It takes so much of the guess work out of putting your layouts together.  I mixed together a lot of the different elements on this layout, to create dimension and interest on my page.  I always love to add pop dots under the OA stickers, just to get that pop off the page look.  I also mixed in some of the buttons and brads to create a scattered effect near the journaling, embellishment cluster, and title work.  This fun mix of product use moves your eye around the page, without lingering on the photo for too long.

Now that I've shared an idea for using bad photos, what about when you have no photos?  Say for instance, if you are creating a December Daily, a mini album for an upcoming trip, or creating an album to give someone as a gift.  This can be a lot of fun, but a little intimidating.  I have a solution to this problem...OA's Here & Now Chapter books!  These books are great for creating a pre-made mini album to use for future photos.  The blank chipboard cover and back are perfect for decorating and the included pages are perfect for pre-embellishing. 

We are a Home School family and plan to plant and grow a garden this year.  I thought it would be great to transform the Farm Girl Here & Now Chapter Book into a little journal for our First Grader to document the growth of our Garden.  I have to admit, I had a lot of fun decorating the front cover of the book.  I used my craft knife, to cut out the word "grow" that is included on the front cover and then I backed each letter with a different patterned paper from the 8x8 paper pad.

Then I got started on the inside of my album.  The inside pages will be perfect for documenting the growth of our plants and for adding photos of the garden.  I used my Cameo to make a few negative cut titles, that I added into the album.

I also had a little bit of fun, with the buttons and added them to the folder tabs on each of the divider pages.  I chose to do a color coded look and matched the buttons to the color of the divider tab.

I added in some of the cute journaling cards, for my daughter to take notes and embellished a few of the pages, leaving room for her to add photos.  The Rubber Stamps included with this collection are adorable and they stamp really great images!  I decided to try out the cute little lamb on this page and it turned out perfectly.

The rest of the book was finished out, using a mix of Tin Pins, Stamps, Chipboard pieces, stickers, stitching, and brads.  And the great thing about this album, is that we can add in more pages as we go, if we need them.  I love having the binder hooks with this album, because they offer so much room for multiple pages and adding a lot of the cute embellishments to your pages.
