Hip Kit Club | Love Every Moment

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Hip Kit Club to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

My August Hip Kit & Add-On Kits arrived this past Wednesday afternoon and by Saturday morning, I had already completed three layouts!  I just couldn’t wait to start creating with all of the awesome papers and embellishments included this month!  The layout I’m sharing today, was actually my third layout, but I decided to share it first, because I had time to create a new process video to go along with it.  First up, here’s a look at the layout!

I love that we receive a variety of Thickers and/or letter stickers in each  month’s Kit.  I thought it would be fun to create an element on my layout, that focused on the different Thickers in this month’s kit.  I used the Woodland Gold Thickers from the Embellishment Kit, the Wildflower Thickers and Wonder Corrugated Thickers from the Main Kit, and the Goodness Thickers from the Project Life Kit.  I started by cutting the heart shape on my Silhouette Cameo, and then I repeated the word Love with the various Thickers, by adhering them to White Cardstock from the Cardstock Add-On.

Before layering the Studio Calico Amelia patterned paper over the White cardstock, I hand stitched around the outside edge with Embroidery Floss.  I didn’t want to cover a lot of the Thickers showing through the heart shape, so I placed my photo on the left hand side and then created embellishment clusters around the photo, above the heart and on the right hand side of the heart.

I finished the layout by completing my title with the Goodness Thickers and the Wonder Corrugated Thickers.  I love to mix up different Thickers sets, to get different looks and textures on my layouts!  And if you would like to see the full process for this layout, you can check out my new Process Video!

This would also be a great technique for using those leftover letters on your Thicker sheets that never get used.  You could paint over the letters once you had them placed on the background or just leave them in their original color for a fun and funky look on your layout!  Make sure you stop by the Hip Kit Website to check out all of the goodies that are included in the August Hip Kits!  I think you will love what you see!

American Crafts | We Were Made for Each Other

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive financial compensation and material product from American Crafts to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

The new Documentary collection from Dear Lizzy went up on the American Crafts Blog last week, and I've been dying to share my first layout with you!  This layout turned out to be one of my new favorites!  I combined hand stitching with 9 different patterned papers from the collection.  And I added machine stitching, for another texture on the page.

How To:  Cut a large circle from the Wonder patterned paper and then layer it over the Me & You patterned paper.  Stitch around the circle, with your sewing machine.  Use Sketch Pens with your Die Cut Machine or trace letters for your title onto your background paper.  Poke holes around each letter and then stitch using a variety of embroidery floss colors.  Cut your title letters on your die cut machine or hand cut them and place in the center of each stitched letter.  Use the Noted Thickers and the Cordial Thickers to complete your title.  Add a photo on the right hand side of your layout.  Punch circle shapes from the Confetti patterned paper.  Machine stitch around each circle, then add them to the inside of the large circle.  Finish your layout by adding Stickers around the outer edge of the circle.

Supplies: Documentary (340294) - Me & You, Documentary (340298) - Wonder, Documentary (340296) - Confetti, Documentary (340311) - Love This, Documentary (340312) - Ever Ever, Documentary (340302) - Blossom, Documentary (340299) - Hello Love, Documentary (340303) - Fresh Start, Documentary (340315) - Party Animal, Documentary (340198) - Noted Thickers, Documentary (340203) - Rub-On Transfer Sheets, Documentary (340207) - Wood Buttons, Documentary (340200) - Accent & Phrase Stickers, Documentary (340201) - Puffy Stickers, Documentary (340199) - Snapshots Thickers, Documentary (340204) - Die Cut Cardstock Shapes, Documentary (340211) - Phrase Stamp, Dear Lizzy (366188) - Cordial Thickers

Illustrated Faith | Child Like Faith

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Illustrated Faith to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

Yesterday I was up on the Illustrated Faith Blog, with something a little different!  I used the new Whatever Is Lovely from Bella Blvd. collection to create a layout, instead of working in my Journaling Bible!  When I hear a story, there is always an image or little “movie” that pops in my head, to go along with it.  One of my favorite images has always been from Matthew 19:14, when Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”  During Jesus’ time children were not valued in the same way they are today.  Children worked hard to provide for their families, right along with the adults.  The disciples rebuked those, who were bringing the children to see Jesus, almost as if they were an annoyance and not worthy of Jesus’ time.

But Jesus intervened, and asked that the little children come to Him!  I can see Him bending low to welcome the children and love them as only He could.  And I can also picture the disciples, probably standing to the side, looking a bit confused!!  Most of the time, those guys just didn’t get it!  HA!

I am so glad, that Jesus welcomes children, and to have a church that teaches our children about His love.  They are always so excited to share what they talked about on Sunday mornings in their small groups.  Recently, they attended a week long camp at our church, that incorporated learning Bible verses, signing worship songs, and learning different Bible stories.  On the last day of camp, I snapped a photo of them, right outside the church.

I hope that one day when they are older, the kids can look through my Journaling Bible and learn more about my faith.  But I also want them to remember their faith in action.  What better way to do that, than with their own photos!  I love to create layouts and use paper and embellishments to go along with the story of my photo.  I decided to use the new Whatever Is Lovely collection from Bella Boulevard, to document the photo and add the verse from Matthew 19:14 to the layout.

If you haven’t been able to get your hands on a Journaling Bible, or just don’t feel like it suits you as the creative outlet for journaling your faith, you could give layouts a try.  The photo can even be any photo that you want to use, based on maybe something God has been sharing with you.  And you don’t even have to use a photo at all!  Try a non-photo layout, that’s maybe based on one of your favorite scriptures or worship songs!  There are so many ways to journal your faith!

Hip Kit Club | I'm Sweet On You

This is a personal blog. All editorial content and projects are intellectual property of ashleyhortondesigns.com. I do receive compensation and material product from Hip Kit Club to develop my craft posts, but all ideas and opinions are my own.

Hi everyone!  I’m back today to share a bright, colorful layout for Hip Kit Club using the July 2015 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits.  I’ve been dying to use the October Afternoon Flower Garden paper included in the July 2015 Main Kit and the July 2015 Paper Add-On Kit.  The colors are so pretty.  But since it’s a very busy pattern, I wanted to use it in smaller amounts.  I used one of the fun cut files designed by Kim Watson, and cut two layers for the flowers.  I used the OA paper for the background of the flower and cut the top piece of the cut file from the AC Grapefruit cardstock included in the July 2015 Cardstock Add-On.  And I stitched around each of the flowers before adhering them to the background paper.

Before adhering the flowers to the White cardstock, I added some color using the Abandoned Coral Distress Paint from the July 2015 Color Add-On.  I dabbed the color on some packaging and used a small brush with some water, to paint the color around the circles. I also splattered some of the paint onto the background, using the brush.

I wanted to use a mix of embellishments from the July Kits to create clusters on each side of my photos.  The Elle’s Studio wood veneers and bits, Crate Paper Chipboard and October Afternoon puffy stickers and flair buttons, were perfect for creating dimension and texture around the photos.  I knew I wanted to use the Crate Paper Journey Thickers and the October Afternoon Mason Jar Alphas, from the July 2015 Project Life Kit, for my title.  But I had two problems.  I had already used some of the letters from the OA alphas and I didn’t have some of the ones I needed, and I had the same problem with the Journey Thickers.  So a “W” from the OA alphas, became an “M” and the number 3’s from the Journey Thickers, became “E’s”!

And because I can’t seem to make a layout without having a touch of Black on it, I finished the layout with some splatters of Black Color Shine.  I’ve loved creating with the July 2015 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits, and now I’m looking forward to the August Kits!  There are some of my favorite new goodies in the August Kits, including products from Pinkfresh Studio and Crate Paper!  If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, make sure you head over to the Hip Kit Website and pick your favorite kit…or all of them…before they sell out!

Big Picture Classes | Old Favorites with a New Twist Class

I am so excited to share some news that I've been keeping quiet over the past several months!  I have been invited to be a Teacher at Big Picture Classes!  Not only is this my first class for BPC, but my first class ever!  One of the goals on my list, has been to teach a class, so I jumped at the chance when I was contacted by BPC.  Right now, you will find information for the upcoming Old Favorites with a New Twist Class under Coming Soon on the BPC website.

http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/classes/old-favorites-with-a-new-twist

In this class, we'll look at new and modern ways to use some of your older tools and ideas, when you're creating a layout.  We all love to learn new techniques, but that doesn't mean we have to abandon those old favorites, we started out with as beginning scrapbookers.  There will also be some cut files, available for download in the class, designed by me!

The Old Favorites with a New Twist Class will go live on Monday, August 10th!  If you already have a membership, with Big Picture Classes, I hope you will check it out.  If you aren't signed up for a monthly membership with BPC, you can start a Free Trial by visiting the Membership page!
